About Westchester – A Welcoming Community

The Westchester neighborhood is nestled in the South Bay Region of Los Angeles. One of the largest airports in the world, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is borders the area to the southwest.

Originally an agricultural area this community grew primarily due to the aerospace industry. The neighborhood was close to Mines Field (now LAX) and the industry grew around the airport and the town. As the industry expanded so did Westchester. With the airport right in ts backyard flight crews often stay at neighborhood hotels during layovers as do travelers. These visitors also frequent local restaurants and cafes. The area is also home to Loyola Marymount University and Otis College of Art and Design

Beginning in the 1930s as inexpensive prefabricated group of homes the neighborhoods now consist of lovely single-family homes on tree lined streets with manicured lawns and lush landscaping. Modern townhouse and condominium communities with courtyards and lovely green spaces have also been built. Styles and prices vary widely but there are affordable homes in this welcoming community.

The regions is served by five public elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. A public adult school also serves the area offering for classes so that they can complete their high school education and other adult courses such as English and computer skills. There are also a number of private schools for all grade levels.

The Westchester Recreation Center offers residents a beautiful area with a playground and a picnic area with barbecue pits. The Center has an auditorium, a community room and an indoor gymnasium, and two indoor basketball courts. Outside there is a heated pool, a lighted football field, a lighted soccer field and ten well lit tennis courts. Summer camps and a basketball league are hosted by the Center.

Services for the older population of the community include a transportation to take seniors to appointments and on errands. The service will also run errands for those who are not able. Additionally there is a Senior Citizen Center with an auditorium and a community room that includes a kitchen and a stage. There is also a beautiful garden and lovely green space with barbecue pits and picnic tables and access to the resources at the Recreation Center.

Eateries in Westchester offer a wide variety of choices. Restaurants serve a variety of cuisines including Mexican, Japanese, and Italian. A number local hotels also have restaurants open to both guests and locals. Cafes and coffee shops are popular stops for breakfast and lunch. You can also go out for sushi, or grab a burger or a pizza. This small community does not have a large commercial area so residents commonly travel to nearby towns to do most of their shopping. Commuting to downtown Los Angeles and other areas is convenient. There is bus service available and easy access to freeways and boulevards.

Westchester is a small neighborhood in a beautiful setting that offers residents the feeling of community. Take the kids to the playground or the pool at the Recreation Center, sign them up for a summer camp, or play a round of tennis. If you are older and looking for a quieter setting visit the senior center and play cards in the community room or relax in the open space and take a nap. Stroll to a local cafe for coffee and breakfast with friends or enjoy a delicious Italian dinner at a local restaurant. The relaxed and easy pace is refreshing.
