About Vernon

Vernon is a small city of just over five miles that sits southeast of downtown Los Angeles. Primarily a commercial area the community is not densely populated but offers cozy welcoming neighborhoods. Residents enjoy beautiful parks, an abundance of recreation options, and convenient shopping, dining, and entertainment opportunities

The city is rich with history. A historic battle of the Mexican-American war was fought in Vernon. It is significant due to the fact that it occurred the day after hostilities were ended. Originally established as an industrial area supported by the nearby railroads ranches also grew in the locality. The three major railroads constructed spurs to the areas enhancing its importance and industries and stockyards sprang up. Many entertainment venues were constructed including a baseball stadium and a boxing arena. There was also a saloon that claimed to be the longest bar in the world with 36 bartenders. These entertainment venues drew many visitors and encouraged businesses to move their companies to the area. Owens-Illinois, Studebaker, and Alcoa were some of the early tenants.

Vernon is a small community with less than 150 residents. The neighborhoods have a comfortable, small-town feel and offer potential residents affordable housing options. Houses sit on small, well-manicured lawns along street lined with palm trees and oaks. The smell of a backyard cookout is common and neighbors chat as they take an after dinner stroll. Building lots are also available for your dream home. Located just five miles south of downtown Los Angeles with easy access to the Santa Monica Freeway and Interstate 110 commuting from Vernon is very convenient.

The Los Angeles Unified School District oversees the public schools that serve the area. There are two elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. A number of private schools serving all grade levels are also available.

Everyday essentials are readily available in Vernon with a number of grocery markets, drug stores, and hardware stores. Other shopping needs are nearby with local Farmer's markets, shopping centers and malls and streets lined with specialty shops and boutiques. There are restaurants, cafes, and fast food establishments in the town and a myriad of dining choices nearby. Residents will find that the shopping, dining, and entertainment choices are endless, just a short drive away.

Residents enjoy parks in the town as well as a number of nearby parks that offer wonderful recreation and relaxation opportunities. One park, Augustus F. Hawkins Nature Park, was once a cement pipe storage yard. It has been transformed into a beautiful area that embodies a calm natural environment with native plants, towering oak trees, meandering streams, a duck filled pond, and rolling hills. There is a picnic area with barbecue facilities, a lushly landscaped walking trail, and an outdoor amphitheater that offers concerts. Other parks located close to Vernon offer picnic areas, playgrounds, lighted basketball and volleyball courts, soccer fields, and community rooms. Several indoor recreation center offer gymnasiums and multipurpose rooms as well as outdoor swimming pools, picnic areas, playgrounds, and sports fields. The area also boasts many hiking and biking trails. You can choose to exercise on paths established along railroad tracks or a creek, others provide Scenic Mountain and/or ocean views. For those who love horseback riding there are winding equestrian trails as well.

Vernon is a small community located about five miles south of downtown Los Angeles. This convenient community has a number of cozy single-family neighborhoods with affordable housing. Residents take advantage of a wide variety of dining, shopping, and entertainment choices. Parks offer wonderful open areas for relaxation and recreation. There are sports fields, swimming pools, and numerous hiking, biking, and equestrian trails provide exercise options in beautiful environments
