About Topanga – A Gem in the Rough

A vast wilderness in the city, that is Topanga. Located only eight miles from Los Angels in Topanga Canyon and surrounded by State Park lands, conservation areas, and the Pacific Ocean this is truly a gem in the rough. Neighborhoods are built in the canyons, cliffs, and at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains offering residents the opportunity to live in nature.

Development of the area began in the 1920s when it was used as a getaway for stars. The natural beauty and tranquility continued to attract artists and musicians and is became known as an bohemian enclave. Today beautiful homes, mansions, and equestrian estates dot the hills. There are also lovely neighborhoods in the what is called lower Topanga. This is the area at the bottom of the canyon that borders Malibu and the junction of Pacific Coast Highway and the Pacific Ocean. Single family homes, condominiums and manufactured homes are available as well as open land on which to build your dream home.

Los Angeles Unified School District serves most of the area with an elementary school, middle school, and high school. Some parts of the region lies within the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and these children attend schools in that zone.

The traditional artistic feel of the region lives on with numerous art galleries and frequent art shows. There are theaters that offer classical plays, musicals, and chambers and others that sponsor educational programs and summer camps. The culture of the area is displayed at the annual Topanga Days fair that has been referred to as the biggest bohemian bash in southern California. Held on Memorial Day weekend this festival includes three stages offering diverse and nonstop music, craft vendors, and food booths providing a wide range of choices for hungry participants.

In addition to the artistic element it is a favorite destination for those who appreciate nature and the the outdoors. Many native plants thrive in the hills including large areas of the California oaks, California coastal sage, and a chaparral eco-region. There is no shortage of wildlife sharing the habitat. In addition to the many bird species that live in the area there are deer, mountain lions, bob cats, weasels, and small mammals such as rabbits and squirrels. The landscape is filled with streams, waterfalls, cliffs, and outcroppings and boasts magnificent views of the mountains, Pacific Ocean, and the city of Los Angeles. It is an idyllic spot to stop and embrace the miracles of nature.

For those seeking exercise and adventure there are a myriad of options with 36 miles of trails to choose from. There are trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and walking. Trails vary from easy to difficult to accommodate all skill levels. Lush vegetation and abundant wildflowers line some trails, others pass by glassy mountain lakes, and some take visitors to summits that offer breath-taking 360 degree views of the ocean and cityscape below. Many enjoy rock climbing and birdwatching is very popular as well.

The winding mountain roads surrounded by natural beauty are a favorite touring destination for drivers. It is the perfect area to take the family on a scenic drive with occasional stops to enjoy the view or grab a bite at a local eatery. Motorcycle and bicycle riders are also fond of these roadways where they can enjoy the curves and challenges they provide.
