Just south of Pasadena in Los Angeles County lies the aptly names South Pasadena. This charming community is nestled in the West San Gabriel Valley, just six miles from downtown Los Angeles. It is bordered on the North by Pasadena, to the Northeast by San Marino, to the South by Alhambra, and on the West by Highland Park.

South Pasadena lies between the much larger City of Pasadena and the Los Angeles metropolis. Though it was once a part of the City of Pasadena, South Pasadena has fought for 100 years to preserve its designation as a distinct and different community.

It has certainly succeeded in maintaining that distinction. It's roughly 25,000 residents enjoy their 3.44 square miles of hillsides and flatlands. The true sense of community and proud passion are part of what makes South Pasadena on of California's most desirable places to live.

South Pasadena is called The City of Trees. Over 21,000 trees native to California line the streets of the attractive neighborhoods. Redwood, sequoia, ash, walnut, and sycamore trees are all represented. Some non-native species, like sweetgum, can also be found. The charming and historic setting, and lack of palm trees, lead many movie and television producers to shoot in South Pasadena.

More than 100 acres of parks and playgrounds grace the land of South Pasadena. The quiet character of the attractive landscape is a testament to the preservation efforts maintained by its residents. The preservation efforts are extended to historical structures as well. Very few cities are recognized as being as firmly committed to maintaining a small-town feel as South Pasadena. They even agreed to pay for legal fees associated with what was a significant battle to keep a freeway out.

While this community is certainly host to and nearby many high-end shopping and fine dining opportunities, their historic and charming small-town vibe is also evident. Many “mom and pop” merchants are found in the business district. The historic Fair Oaks Pharmacy and Soda Fountain as well as the famous Rialto Theater are located in downtown South Pasadena. Many eclectic restaurants and shops call South Pasadena home.

South Pasadena real estate is renown for its tree-lined streets and historic California Craftsman homes. Again the residents commitment to preservation is found in the preservation of both the architectural and natural beauty found within their neighborhoods. The homes here cater to a wide variety of lifestyles and play tribute to one of the most culturally vibrant areas in California.

The South Pasadena Unified School district is highly desired and acclaimed. It includes three elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. Citizens have set up and run a private fund-raising organization to maintain the superb educational opportunities.
