About Monrovia
Nestled at the base if the picturesque Sierra Madre Mountain in the San Gabriel
Valley lays beautiful Monrovia. Just eight miles easy of Pasadena and 20 miles northeast
of Los Angeles, Monrovia is conveniently close to city attractions and amenities
while retaining its unique charm.
Founded in 1886, Monrovia is rich with and proud of its heritage. It boasts more
than 100 historic landmarks. Monrovia's Old Town is a good example. Lovingly restores
and revitalized, it is a regional attraction and local necessity. Old Town is where
residents and visitors come for shopping, dining, and entertainment in an atmosphere
like no other.
Myrtle Avenue features unique shops and restaurants, a 12-screen movie palace, and
a small-town ambiance. Free parking and lots of character draw those looking to
shop or dine. Above the shops are small, thriving businesses and happy residents
in condos and apartments. It is this mixture that makes Old Town a living community,
safe and friendly.
Monrovia is renown for the rich architectural held in its borders. Among the famous
homes are The Oaks, an 1884 Victorian once owned by William Monroe. The Upton Sinclair
House is the former home of Upton Sinclair, Pulitzer Prize winning author of “Dragon's
Teeth.”
In a town as in love with history as Monrovia, newer buildings are made to reflect
times past. The Krikorian Movie Theater on Myrtle Avenue is designed in 1930's art
deco, complete with stained glass, turrets, and a wraparound marquee. Despite having
been built in 2000, a trip to this theater brings one back to the golden era, when
attending a moving picture was an affair to remember.
From humble beginnings as a thin community of orange groves, Monrovia has grown
to a lively residential community. The pride in their heritage is seen in preserved
and lovingly restored historic homes, but the needs of modern families are also
considered. Monrovia real estate is varied and ranges from vintage Victorian to
modern, and from apartments to large showcase homes.
Seven park can be found in Monrovia, offering residents untold options for outdoor
fun. There is a nature center, hiking trails, picnic areas, sports fields, tennis
courts, playgrounds, and much more. Over 140 acres of hiking and camping terrain
provide numerous recreational opportunities. Swimming pools, an Aquatics Center,
YMCA and other facilities also serve Monrovia's active population.
Students here are served by the Monrovia Unified School District. The district consists
of five elementary schools, three of which received the National Achieving Schools
Award for the extraordinary academic performance of their students. There are also
two middle schools, one high school, and team of educators who hold seriously the
responsibility of caring for the community's young learners.
Monrovia offers one of the largest concentrations of high-tech businesses in the
Valley, a lively Old Town dining, entertainment, and shopping district, peaceful
and protected neighborhood full of historic houses, along with new developments
along major transportation corridors. Such fantastic and varied amenities make Monrovia
a delightful place to call home.
