a wonderful day strolling this 1.5 mile stretch that has department stores, boutiques,
restaurants, and cafes. Take in the history of this achievement knowing that it
was the first commercial zone of this kind in the country. Specifically designed
to accommodate automobile traffic a portion of Wilshire Boulevard was designated
for development. The street was the first thoroughfare to have dedicated left-turn
lanes and timed traffic lights. Business were required to provide parking lots and
had to be designed to be easily recognizable by a potential customer driving by
at thirty miles an hour. These innovations attracted both business and shoppers
and the area grew very quickly. It became a shoppers mecca drawing crowds because
of the convenient parking lots, famous department stores, boutiques, and eateries.
Due to the immediate success of the region it was dubbed the Miracle Mile. As other
areas adopted this model the success lessened but it has added other attractions
such as as a number of museums in an area designed Museum Row to maintain it's vitality.
