About Los Feliz -A Happy Place
In Spanish feliz means happy and this is an accurate description of this historic,
pleasant and convenient location. Los Feliz, also known as Rancho Los Feliz, is
a neighborhood in the Hollywood area of Los Angeles, California. The name is derived
from a colonial land grantee named Jose Vicente Feliz and the villages or rancherias
established by the first Native American settlers in the area.
Neighborhoods in Los Feliz include large developments with majestic homes on large
well landscaped lawns, cozy single-family communities on tree lined streets. There
is Spanish architecture and modern urban construction. Multi-family homes, condominium
complexes, and townhouse neighborhoods are also available. House prices vary widely
but affordable homes are available.
Los Angeles Unified School District serves the Los Feliz area. There are two public
elementary schools and a public high school. Five private schools and one parochial
school are also in the area.
The town is less than three square miles with many restaurants, sidewalk cafes,
and coffee shops are within walking distance. When dining out there are a variety
of cuisines represented at local eateries, you can make a reservations for a fine-dining
experience, stop by a local cafe, grab a burger or a sandwich, or take a pizza home
for dinner. Shopping includes shores and specialty shops including electronics,
books, and music. Additionally there are theaters, a comedy club, and local pub
for entainment. For many California residents that spend much of their time commuting,
this small, walkable community is an attractive alternative.
The area is nestled between Griffith Park to the north, and Silver Lake and East
Hollywood to the south. Hollywood Hills and Hollywood are to the east and Atwater
Village, the Golden State Freeway, Glassell Park, and Echo Park are to the west.
Griffith Park is a large municipal park with a wilderness area and landscaped picnic
areas. Residents can enjoy swimming, camping, horseback riding, tennis, golf and
picnicking. There are hiking and biking trails and jogging and walking paths. Both
the Griffith Observatory and the Greek Theater are also located within the park.
The Observatory includes space and science exhibits and is home of the Los Angeles
Zoo. A 5,700 seat arena, the Greek Theater is a historic and unique entertainment
experience and has hosted some of the biggest names in entertainment. There are
also two golf courses, a driving range, sports fields, and hiking and equestrian
trails in the park.
Los Feliz has had, and continues to have, many famous residents. Walt Disney's first
animation studio was in Los Feliz on Kingswell Avenue and it is thought that he
drew the first images of Micky Mouse in his uncle's garage just down the street.
Disney's close ties to the area is demonstrated by the entrance to the California
Adventure theme part at Disneyland. It is modeled after Los Feliz during the 1920's
and includes a shop called the Los Feliz Five and Dime.
This “happy” place offers residents a community with in a beautiful neighborhoods
and well designed condominium and townhouse developments. The quaint downtown offers
conveniences and entertainment within walking distance and nearby recreation areas
that offer leisure and activities.
