About La Puente
La Puente is a picturesque southern California city located just 20 miles east of
downtown Los Angeles. The name of the city means 'the bridge' and originated from
a bridge constructed across the San Jose Creek in 1769. The bridge appears on the
city seal. Primarily a residential community residents have easy access to Interstate
10 and the Pomona Freeway that makes commuting convenient.
Those looking to relocate to the area will find a variety of lovely neighborhoods
with affordable housing opportunities. Developments with well maintained single
family homes, beautifully designed condominium complexes, and neatly landscaped
mobile home parks are among the options. Housing styles and sizes vary and you will
find homes in existing communities and newly built houses as well. Neighborhoods
offer green lawns and shaded patios along streets that encourage an after dinner
stroll. A number of condominium complexes exist throughout the city offering units
of varying sizes surrounded by lovely grounds and amenities. There are well-designed
and welcoming mobile home parks as well that offer residents amenities such as pools
and club houses.
The community is committed to maintaining well maintained neighborhoods. To this
end they offer a deferred loan program and a grant program to residents. The deferred
loan program provides a deferred, interest free loan of up to $37,390 and the grant
program is a $7,000 award that does not have to be repaid. The monies must be used
for housing improvements such as roofing, plumbing, painting, or correcting health
and safety violations.
Educational services are overseen by the Hacienda La Puente School District. There
are six elementary public schools, two public middle schools, and one public high
school. A private high school is also available in La Puente.
La Puenta residents enjoy a Community Center, Youth Learning Activity Center, a
Senior Center, and La Puente Park. The Recreation Services Department sponsors adult
sports leagues such as an adult basketball teams for both men and women, a coed
volleyball and coed softball. There is also youth little league, softball, and football
teams.
The Community Center is proud of a program for local youth called Self-esteem Through
Activities, Recreation, and Sports (STARS). Children participate in activities,
arts and crafts projects, cultural arts, and story telling. There are also organized
sports such as basketball, soccer, flag football, and field hockey. Participants
also receive tutoring and homework assistance and health and wellness classes that
include nutritional education and physical activities.
La Puente Park provides lighted athletic fields for baseball, softball, football,
and soccer as well as handball and basketball courts. There are also picnic shelters
and a snack bar. The park is the site of the annual Fourth of July celebration with
arts and crafts, food booths, and fireworks. During the summer weekly concerts and
movies are held in the park. Other festivities are hosted in the park such as the
Veterans Day Ceremony, the Haunted Maze, and holiday parade and tree lighting.
The Senior Center is open weekdays and has meeting rooms, a dining hall, a computer
room, a fitness area, classrooms, and a library/television room. Participants enjoy
meals, educational classes, recreational activities, dances, and trips. The center
hosts events, health fairs, and arts and craft boutiques.
Diners will find a vast array of choices whether they are going out for dinner,
lunch, breakfast or a snack. There are steak houses, seafood restaurants, eateries
representing a wide range of cuisines, delicatessens, cafes, bistros, burger joints,
and fast food eateries. You can make a reservation for a fine dining experience,
enjoy a delicious lunch at a quaint bistro or sidewalk cafe, relish a juicy hamburger
for lunch, or take home wings or pizza to munch on your patio.
La Puente has big box stores, department stores, specialty shops, and a diverse
group of grocery stores and markets. Residents enjoy a weekly Farmer's Market for
fresh fruits and vegetables. The neighboring Puente Hills Mall is also a popular
destination for a shopping trip. There are brand name department stores, specialty
shops, boutiques, and eclectic food choices that include chain restaurants and fast
food eateries.
Residents enjoy local activities and festivals as well as local athletic teams.
They are also conveniently located to cinemas, theaters, concert arenas, famous
