Hawaiian Gardens was incorporated in 1964. It draws its name from an entertaining
story. In the 1920's, the area was a rest stop. A local fruit stand owner built
a bamboo frame shack and covered it with palm leaves to sell his fruit at the rest
stop. His little stand grew in popularity, and went by the name Hawaiian Gardens.
The name stuck and was one of the few landmarks in the then rural area. So was born
the city roughly 40 years later.
This is a small community by any measure. Nestled on less than one square mile of
land, it is home to approximately 14,250 residents. It is the smallest community
by area in Los Angeles County. Though small, the community is active and involved.
It is a full-service city, featuring its own police and fire department. The community
consistently contributes to providing transportation services, a library, food bank,
and child care services.
In less than one square miles, there are three city parks as well as the Robert
E. Lee Activity Center. The activity center features a full size gymnasium, three
indoor racquetball courts, and equipped boxing and weight rooms.
