About Glendale
Glendale is the third largest city in Los Angeles County. Nestled in the San Fernando
Valley and bisected by the Verdugo Mountains the city has a Mediterranean climate
and picturesque neighborhoods with majestic views.
The rich history of Glendale includes the airport, now closed, where Charles Lindbergh
took off for the first commercial west to east transcontinental flight. It is also
home to the Forest Lawn Memorial-Park known for its art collection and as the final
resting place for many celebrities. Bob's Big Boy hamburger chain started in Glendale
as did Baskin-Robbins first ice cream parlor. It continues to be a popular spot
for big business that include Dreamworks SKG, a large Walt Disney Company campus,
the Muppets Studio, and Marvel Studios.
The city of Glendale has more than 5,000 acres of natural open space and residents
embrace protecting the environment and sharing their community with local vegetation
and wildlife. This dedication is demonstrated by the float being designed for the
2014 Rose Parade. Title “Let's Be Neighbors” the float will include representations
of the animals and plants of the neighborhood.
The City developed the Greener Glendale Plan to promote sustainable living through
eco-friendly programs and projects. The community strives to increase energy efficiency,
conserve water, instituting green building standards, and reducing waste. The residents
recently embraced a zero waste plan and take advantage of local programs such as
recycling services, composting workshops, free recycling of electronic waste, and
a refrigerator recycling program. Residents also take advantage of four community
gardens and three Farmers' Markets.
There are luxurious mansions on lushly landscaped yards with swimming pools, tennis
courts, and mountain views. There are also lovely single family neighborhoods with
beautiful family homes of various styles, sizes, and price ranges. These communities
are designed along tree lined streets with pretty houses on well-maintained yards
with swimming pools, inviting outdoor living space, and many with majestic mountain
views. Residents enjoy backyard picnics, pool parties, walks and bike rides through
the neighborhood, and relaxing on the patio with a good book.
There are also affordable townhouses and condominium complexes with welcoming units
of different sizes and styles. Residents enjoy comfort, convenience, and mountain
views as well as amenities such as swimming pools, spas, and workout facilities
The Glendale Unified School District oversees the public schools in the city. There
are four public high schools. There are also private schools and the Glendale Community
College.
Residents enjoy lovely parks and recreation centers that offer programs and host
local festivals. The Adult Recreation Center has multi-use rooms, a fully equipped
exercise room, a lounge, billiards room, table tennis tables, and a pickle ball
court. There are also walking paths and courtyards, one with seating and a fireplace
and another with chairs, tables, and umbrellas. It provides services for senior
citizens including exercise rooms, health screenings, a variety of classes, travel
opportunities, recreational activities, and special events. Maple Park Community
Center has two large meeting rooms, a full kitchen, a computer lab, recreation room,
a full court gymnasium, and a large outdoor terrace. There are also walking paths,
a tennis court, picnic area with tables, a handicapped accessible playground. The
Pacific Community Center is a newer facility with conference and meeting rooms,
a gymnasium, computer lab, an arts and science room, and a game room. They hold
classes that promote wellness, learning, and personal growth. Outside visitors enjoy
a picnic area, a little league ball field, multi-purpose field and court, a playground,
water-play area, and an outdoor theater. Brand Park is a large park with hiking
and biking trails, picnic areas, a playground, children's wading pool, basketball
court, and softball field. Glendale Narrows Riverwalk is an equestrian facility
and recreational walking and hiking trails. There are also many small parks located
throughout the community that offer a wide variety of amenities such as community
rooms, picnic areas, playgrounds, and athletic fields.
Single focus parks include Verdugo Skate Park and Pacific Pool Park. The Skate Park
has a 15,000 square foot concrete facility with a clover bowl section, kidney pool,
street plaza with rails and ledges and snake run that ends in a 9 foot bowl. The
Park sponsors classes and competitions. Pacific Park Pool includes the pool, grand
stands, showers, and lockers and offers a summer aquatics program.
The Scholl Canyon Golf Course is an 18 hole golf course that also has a driving
range, putting green, and tennis courts. Many learn the game or improve their game
at the Golf Learning Center that provides a variety of programs and instructors
to suite skill levels.
Glendale has indoor and outdoor shopping malls anchored by brand named stores that
are convenient for locals and a popular destination for visiting shoppers. Big name
stores represented are Macy's, Nordstrom, Tiffany & Co., J.C. Penney, the Armani
Exchange, and Urban Outfitters. The Glendale Galleria was home to the first Disney
Store, first Panda Express, and first three story Target.
Shoppers also enjoy three Farmer's Markets. Each market is held on a different day,
Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, providing more access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
Eateries of every type, style, and cost are located throughout the city. There are
steak houses, ethnic restaurants, quaint cafes and bistros, eclectic delicatessens,
and fast food establishments representing everyone's favorite take home meal. Enjoy
a fine dining experience surrounded by your favorite dishes, have a delicious casual
meal at a cafe inside or outside, grab a burger at a sports bar, or pick up a pizza
