About Covina
Covina is a quaint city in Los Angeles County. It lies approximately 22 miles east
of downtown Los Angeles. It is sometimes confused with West Covina, which is actually
to its south and west and significantly larger in population and square miles. To
its west is Irwindale, Vincent, and Bladwin Park. To the north are Azusa and Glendora.
San Dimas lies to its east with Via Verde and Tamona to its southeast. The community
of Covina is nearby many attractions, but maintains a personality uniquely its own
Covina was founded in 1886 then incorporated in 1901. The city's fertile soil and
ample California sun helped it develop as an agricultural hub, first with vineyards
and then producing and shipping oranges. The valleys of the adjacent San Gabriel
Mountains formed a cove around the groves and vineyards. This is where Covina name
was born. The words “cove” and “vine” led Frederick Eaton to call the new township
Covina.
By 1909 Covina was the third largest orange producer in the world. Beginning in
the World War II era the orange groves were mostly replaced by tract housing, drawn
to the area's flat ground and picturesque surroundings. It now supports a thriving
population of 47,000 in its one square mile, or “One Mile Square and All There”
as coined by F.E. Wolfarth, the winner of a slogan contest by the sity in 1922.
Covina real estate still shows the influence of the mid-century tract housing. Many
of houses have been updated or completely remodeled, but the even layout and plot
parcels is very reminiscent of the era. Both single-family houses and multiple family
homes can be found. Newer construction of townhouses and single-family homes have
diversified Covina real estate. Pleasant apartments are also plentiful for those
in the market.
